The Arizona Republic Tuesday, April 6, 1993 U.S. firm adapts laser device made in Russia to draw blood The Associated Press LITTLE ROCK, Ark. Russian and American researchers say they have come up with a way to take a blood sample by substituting a laser beam for those sharp little steel lancets. "We're going to change the whole industry," says Charles Vestal, chairman of Venisect Inc. of Little Rock.
The company refined a device that once was a Soviet military secret. Lasers already are used extensively in surgery. The new method makes a minuscule opening, up to 0.5mm in diameter and 0.5mm deep. The hole is just big enough to allow the collection of a small blood sample, and it heals the same as any other tiny puncture. Researchers say the laser may help ease fears about spreading disease OBITUARIES Obituaries published by The Arizona Republic in its news columns are provided free of charge as a public service.
Photos of publishable quality are printed on a space-available basis, also free of charge. The Republic cannot be responsible for returning unsolicited photos.
